Mother's Rugby is sponsoring two different initiatives in 2010: "Team Jinja" and a High School Big Brother program. We are easily the most well-attended student event almost every weekend on campus and reaching out into the community like no other sport. We have a great situation here on campus and want to give back to others. Our team is to be commended for actually getting out and volunteering and spending their own money and time to make a difference. The team is putting hours and resources into their community, school and beyond - we challenge all other UMW sports to do the same. If you would like to donate to either program below please contact each initiative at the email listed below. The details of these efforts are as follows below.
"Team Jinja" in Jinja, Uganda

Mother's Rugby is adopting a youth rugby club in Jinja Uganda. This team is made up of orphans ages 10-16. The enthusiasm of our students for this group has been amazing. Contact Scott Hoffmann at shoffman@umw.edu to donate cleats, balls, jerseys, shorts, funds - any rugby gear you can spare. Please see some notes below from Scott's aunt who is working with these children daily:
Joe is developing Rugby in Jinja by improving the club, spreading awareness, gaining reputable sponsors and coaching. He is coaching an amateur men’s team, with the hope of competing in the Uganda Super 8 cup. Joe has also introduced orphaned kids aged 10-16 to the game. The young boys have shown a higher level of dedication and commitment than the men. They hang out at the club sometimes all day and train at 7am and 2pm. They express a desire to improve their athletic skills and time management.
We believe Rugby is offering the children a positive outlet and skill that may provide them with a higher education and opportunity in the future, because it is the fastest growing sport in Uganda and played in every University in Kampala.
The boy’s have shown drastic improvement and are now ready to compete against the larger Kampala team. But there is one problem. None of them own shoes let alone rugby boots.
We believe these boys require support because they’ve already shown a high work ethic by ridding the club of a wasp nest, chasing out rats, cleaning and organizing the equipment room and hand washing 40 jerseys. They offered this service off their own accord and did not ask for anything in return. This initiative sparked the idea to record their hours to improve the club and earn the end goal of owning their own pair of rugby boots. This promotes the life lesson that you must work for what you are given.
Mother's - TC Williams - Open House and Big Brother Program

Mother's Rugby will be working this spring and hopefully in years to come with TC Williams HS in Alexandria VA to set up a rugby exchange. The idea is to partner our freshman with their freshman, our sophomores with their sophomores, etc...
Our goal is to add a high school or youth club each year and help the high school students have a resource to bounce college questions off, discuss goals, and ask for advice. This program is coordinated through TC's coach, Jeff Murphy. We have gotten off to a great start and already had excellent exchanges and visits between students and coaching staffs.
